Transition Nottingham

Transition is all about peak oil, which means that the age of easily available and cheap oil is coming to an end, and in fact some people say we may already have passed the time when oil was easy to get out of the ground and therefore cheap and readily available. As oil gets rarer and more difficult to find we have to find ways of living without oil. But what is oil? We all know we get fuel for our vehicles from oil but what else do we get from oil? Transition Nottingham are looking at oil not as a fuel to burn but as one of the most useful chemical compounds human kind has ever come across and asking the big question. If oil is going to become more scarce, we have to be much more careful about how we use it. Do we burn this wonderful stuff or do we make useful stuff out of it that will benefit us in other ways? As well as a large display showing some of the wonderful products that come from oil Transition Nottingham have devised a wordsearch quiz to take away and remind you how useful oil is.

At the heart of the event Transition Nottingham will be showing what has been happening around the city and what local transition groups have been up to.

How Many Light Bulbs : David Mackay (Cambridge University) 5 mins

Cambridge University physicist, David Mackay, in a passionate, personal analysis of the energy crisis in the UK, debunks some myths about energy saving. After showing us what won't work - he goes on to show what will make a difference at home, But, his big point is that this will not be enough individual efforts are not enough. Instead we need to make 'sweeping national changes' to our energy production, and we can't reject everything available to us.

A Convenient Solution : 9 mins

A short film about climate change and energy We all know that, to stop climate change, we need to stop burning fossil fuels. The government says we need nuclear power to do this. This film explains why nuclear power can’t stop climate change and lays down a better, cheaper, more convenient solution.
